She walked right into the house through the back door that her husband was notorious for not locking.
Kim stood there in the doorway that led into the master bedroom, hidden in the dark of night and looked in. She walked silently towards the end of the bed. She found it a challenge to keep her breathing quiet as the uncontrollable tears ran down her face. She stood at the bottom edge of the bed, the only light from the muted television. She stared at them, being very quiet so she would not wake them.
The reality of the deception over the last few weeks washed over her in waves as Kim stood their with the truth in front of her own eyes. It was one thing to suspect or be told by your husband their was another woman and he wanted a divorce, but to see her sleeping next to him in what used to be your bed - with her head on his chest....was completely another story.
Something inside her snapped and she was no longer in charge of herself. The hurt feeling went away and anger set in. She was driven by a pain that she could not control. She slowly and quietly went into the closet and grabbed a hidden hand gun that they had kept for protection. She had to make sure that they didn't get away. She had to make sure that they suffered as much as she had.
She went back towards the bed and watched as they slept. The girl who slept so peacefully was pretty,
obviously younger. She had no idea who the 'random tramp' was and she really didn't care she thought to herself.
What she did know is that the man she had spent over 20 years married to, Kevin, had left her. He had said that he had met another women and that he had gotten 'bored' with Kim. He wanted someone outgoing, spontaneous. He went as far to point out that they never talked and he was tired of 'just going to sleep' at night. The final argument was that he wanted children, as if it was her fault she could not give him any. She had packed her things and left. Tonight, she came back.
Feeling deceived, angry and hurt - while the tears continued in a steady stream, she lifted the gun and pointed it toward the girl, she'd make her now ex-husband watch.
The gun clicked and they both opened their eyes immediately and both sat up, exposing the fact that the girl was wearing nothing. Kim was even more enraged as Kevin turned on a light, saw her and said in a loud ordering voice -
"Kim, Put the gun down."
She just said "No, you don't get to tell me what to do, watch."
She pulled the trigger without hesitation. She shot the girl. Kim was surprised at how easy it had been. She had thought on the way here she might be to afraid to shoot the gun. But she found it exhilarating and easy. The bullet had lodged straight into the girls head, she died immediately. Kim's mind felt a certain amount of relief and happiness as the girl died. Kim had meant to shoot her in the chest, but hadn't been prepared for the kickback of the gun, she made a mental note to aim lower next time. She felt as if a weight had been lifted as Kevin started to Yell at her again to her to put the gun down.
She quickly re-aimed the gun and it clicked again. He started to lunge toward her and without another word, she pulled the trigger and shot him. He fell back, but didn't die immediately. She smiled. She had shot him exactly where she wanted to, in the chest. She crouched down in front of him, putting her face directly in front of his and stared deeply into his eyes, saying nothing as the life drained out of him.
He managed to whisper -
"Was it worth it?"
"Yes, absolutely. I feel much better. NOW you two can be together."
He died and she sat there for a few minutes watching him. It was a complete truth she had told him. It was worth it, but she couldn't go on like this.
She was sad that her marriage had ended this way. Kim had loved Kevin. They had been high school sweethearts. But real life had intruded on their relationship, and over the years they had both drifted apart.
She knew her only option if stayed alive was a lifetime in jail. She hadn't really considered beforehand what to do next. She did feel vindicated for what they had done to her and she was satisfied with her decision to kill them both.
She smiled as she turned the gun on herself and with a need for complete closure pointed it at the temple of her forehead. The gun clicked again.
